First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, San Marcos was formed by the Reverend Henry Thomas in 1853 with only two members. The congregation had grown to 50 members by 1856. After the Civil War, the church was reactivated by Reverend W.H.D. Carrington.
A new church building was built in 1893 when some members withdrew because of doctrinal conflicts. Designed by Architect Edward Northcraft, it was erected on land donated by Edwin J.L. Green. Membership increased after a revival led by J.B. Boen in 1895.
A New Sanctuary was added in 1910 and the original building was turned 90 degrees to face Comanche Street . It was largely a “do it yourself” project with church members providing most of the labor. The original building would later be subdivided into activity room for the church members.
The church was further expanded into a two-story wing in 1953. The church was damaged by fire in 1984, and the church acquired property Ranch Road 12 in 1985 to relocate.
A new stone building was competed in 1988. The Ranch Road 12 building includes a sanctuary, staff offices, meeting rooms, a fellowship hall and an education wing that includes a playground. There are numorous stained glass windows, and rock architecture throughout the building. The 15 acre grounds have large oaks, a large back deck and strolling grounds.
First Christian Church San Marcos continues to meet and worship in this beautiful building.
