How sadly ironic that Epiphany – the date on the Christian calendar celebrating the revelation of Jesus Christ as the light of the world – this year should fall on one of the darkest days in U.S. history. January 6, 2021 will hover each year as one of the most infamous, reprehensible and horrific days in memory. Some of us recall December 7, 1941. Many of us remember November 22, 1963 and nearly all of us remember September 11, 2001. Wednesday, January 6, 2021 ranks among them.

Your church board typically meets for study and strategic thinking on the first Thursday of each month. This past Thursday, January 7, 2021, we spent the evening

in meditation and guided prayer.

We prayed for:

  1. Faithful gospel witnesses in the world out of sadness for what a world that needs Jesus saw from the capitol of what they believe to be a predominantly Christian country that respects peace-loving people of all faiths and no faith.
  2. Unity in our church and among all churches that we

all might be part of a movement for wholeness in a

fragmented country.

  1. Pure hearts in God’s people. “Heavenly Father, humble us.”
  2. For the churches in our country to be places of peace and peace-making.
  3. For our nation and its leaders.

“Lord God of Heaven,

we pray for our leaders and all who are in authority.

We pray for their repentance where that is the need and for their resolve where that remains their need.”

In the darkness of this hour, we must look to

the light of Jesus. He, not our nation, is our Savior.

New Year's Resolutions!

From Andy Stanley's message "This One Thing".

"We all make resolutions. We all break resolutions. But if we're really honest, there is something in each of our lives—a habit, a relationship, a debt—that deserves our attention this year."

In the message Andy gives us help that can be the key to finally accomplishing the one thing we each need to put our mind to this year.

"This year you can do a lot of things. You will do a lot of things. But what’s the one thing you need to do? What’s

the one thing that will make an extraordinary difference in

your life?

Begin to do it today.

1. What New Year’s resolutions have you made in the past? Did you follow through on them?

2. Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year?

What is it?

3. Talk about a time at work or in your family life when you couldn’t focus on something important because your time was consumed by something urgent. How did the important thing suffer as a result?

4. If you think about focusing this year on the one thing that is most important, would you change your New Year’s resolution? What would your revised resolution be?

5. What urgent thing robs you of time to focus on your most important thing? What can you do to shift your priorities?

6. Who do you know that can hold you accountable for following through on the goal you set? What is the greatest barrier to asking that person to do so?

Read Nehemiah 6:3b

"I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"
